Sweers Island

Sweers Island is Home for most of the year. It is a small, otherwise uninhabited island in Australia's Gulf of Carpentaria, 20 miles offshore, near the Northern Territory border. The climate is Dry Tropics and most of the time it is ideal flying & boating conditions.
It is a Wilderness area, the only visitor access is by air, with the nearest town (Burketown) about 70 kilometres away. Freight and supplies are delivered on a weekly barge from the port of Karumba which is about 120 kilometres away. We generate our own electricity and for water we have wells or in times of low rainfall, we desalinate from the sea. We have radio telephone, satellite internet and television. Mobile phone coverage is intermittent. All the stuff we need, and none of the stuff we don't! The main airstrip is 1100m of good gravel, direction 12/30. I also use a short private grass strip close to the hangar.
We operate a small fishing lodge on the island and welcome pilots. You can learn more about it by visiting our website at: sweers.com.au
